How many extinguishers do I need?
Answer four questions for a first estimate, based on the coverage rules in NFPA 10.
YOUR ESTIMATE
1Multipurpose ABC extinguishers1 per floor across 1 floor. Suggested size: 10 lb ABC (4-A:80-B:C).
1Class K kitchen extinguisherWithin 30 feet of the cooking line.
- Rated as ordinary hazard. Each extinguisher covers up to 6,000 sq ft.
- Nobody should walk more than 75 feet to reach one, so walls, corridors and separate rooms can add more.
- Every floor needs at least one, mounted near an exit and kept visible.
- A kitchen also needs a hood suppression system over the cooking line. The Class K unit backs it up.
