Suffolk County fire code requirements
Suffolk County follows the Fire Code of New York State, enforced by each town and village. The county licenses everyone who services extinguishers and kitchen systems.
The code
Who enforces it
Fire extinguishers
| Monthly | Quick check by your staff: in place, visible, gauge in the green, pin and seal intact, tag dated and initialed. |
| Every year | Full inspection and maintenance by a licensed servicing company, with a new tag. |
| Every 6 years | Dry chemical units that need a 12-year test are emptied and serviced internally. |
| Every 5 or 12 years | Hydrostatic pressure test: 5 years for water, CO2 and Class K units, 12 years for dry chemical. |
| Kitchens | A Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of commercial cooking equipment. |
Suffolk County requires a county license for every technician who services portable extinguishers or fixed extinguishing systems, and a certificate of registration for the company. Central Fire holds Suffolk County License 202.
Kitchen hood suppression systems
| Every 6 months | Inspected and serviced, and again after any discharge (Fire Code of NYS 904.12). |
| Every year | Fusible links replaced. |
| After service | A certificate of inspection is provided to the fire code official. |
| New systems | Permits and plan approval go through the town or village where the business is. |
Hood and duct cleaning (NFPA 96)
| Monthly | Solid fuel cooking (wood or charcoal). |
| Quarterly | High volume: 24-hour kitchens, charbroiling, wok cooking. |
| Every 6 months | Moderate volume, which covers most restaurants. |
| Every year | Low volume: churches, day camps, seasonal businesses, senior centers. |
Sprinkler systems (NFPA 25)
| Monthly | Gauges and control valves checked. |
| Quarterly | Waterflow alarms, supervised valves and the fire department connection. |
| Every year | Heads, piping and hangers inspected, and a main drain test. |
| Every 5 years | Internal pipe assessment and gauges replaced or recalibrated. |
If you fall behind
Servicing extinguishers or suppression systems without a Suffolk license is a misdemeanor. Ask any company that services your equipment for its county license number.
